Locked Inside, 'Reinventing and Adapting Through Coronavirus'

COVID-19 is a particular threat to informal settlements because of their population density and economic precarity. Faced with this twin challenge, a disease accompanied by preventative measures which disproportionately affect lower-income jobs, the community reacted by coming together, with local organizations restructuring and adopting new ways of serving the public. And when individual efforts were needed, fashion designers, philanthropists, artists, and midwives stepped up to offer their skills for the greater good, mostly without pay. For many years Kibera has served as a visual metaphor for poverty and suffering. These images, showing the solidarity of a close-knit community in the face of adversity, reveal the neighbourhood’s true character. I was born and raised in Kibera, and I've never seen this community coming together like now.
